Abstract

The Brooklyn Bridge shut down took place on May 14, 2022 in protest of Roe v. Wade being overturned, and as part of a nationwide “Bans Off Our Bodies” day of action. Event organizers included Planned Parenthood of Greater New York, PPGNY Action Fund, Abortion Access Front, Jahajee Sisters, Girls for Gender Equity, New York Civil Liberties Union, The Latina Institute New York, National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum, Thank God for Abortion, National Institute for Reproductive Health, New York Abortion Access Fund, and Malikah.

A statement from Planned Parenthood of Greater New York Action Fund (PPGNY), via their official twitter, @PPGNYact, read:

“This past weekend we SHUT DOWN the Brooklyn Bridge in a powerful display of support for reproductive justice. Let’s continue to channel that energy into action! Tell New York lawmakers to pass an Equality Amendment NOW! An Equality Amendment in the NYS Constitution would prohibit discrimination based on a persons pregnancy or pregnancy outcome. It would also protect us from discrimination based on race, ethnicity, national origin, disability, sex, sexual orientation, and gender expression.
